ATA Division News: Chinese Language Division Update
A warm welcome to all new members of the Chinese Language Division (CLD) and and a "glad you're back" to those of you who have continued your CLD membership. We hope everyone had a great holiday.
The CLD was established in 2000 with the goal of supporting translators and interpreters who work in the Chinese language. By giving these individuals a channel for sharing experience, expertise, and information, the Division offers a unique and special association for its members. At the end of 2007, there were 583 members in the CLD.
Translation Currents
It has been almost six years since the first issue of Translation Currents, the CLD newsletter, was published. We'd like to resume the publication of this Division newsletter with the hope that it will help us share information and get reconnected again.
Call for Contributions
We'll begin by collecting articles for a late Winter 2008 issue, and we're asking for your contributions! We're open to any submissions related to Chinese language translation and interpreting. A few article ideas we've thought of include:
- Certification—how to get certified and is it worth it? What certification is available?
- Translation and interpreting experiences
- How computer-aided translation tools help you in your projects
In addition, please consider contributing to the newsletter's "Message Board," "News and Upcoming Events," "Discussion Forum," and "Translation Jokes" columns. Advertisements are welcome.
Submission Details
- There is no limit to the article's length.
- Articles may be submitted in either English or Chinese (traditional or simplified).
- Both members and non-members may submit articles for consideration.
- The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2008.
In consideration of some readers who may lack the full ability to read either Chinese or English, we're asking authors to provide an abstract or summary of their article in the other language. That is, if your article is in Chinese, we'd like you to provide an abstract in English and vice versa.
We Want Your Photos, Too
Anyone with photos from the ATA 48th Annual Conference in San Francisco? We'd really like to be able to include some of these in the upcoming issue of Translation Currents. Please consider sending them in for publication. Be sure to provide a brief caption and the name of the photographer to be credited.
