Arabic Translation Techniques
Shuckran Kamal, chair, ATA Accreditation Committee, Vienna, Virginia; and
Jackie Murgida, freelance Arabic into English translator, North Hampton,
New Hampshire
This workshop gives participants hands-on experience applying the basic techniques of "meaning-based" translation by practicing textual analysis to produce a more accurate and truthful rendition of the source-language text. The presenters contend that when translators consciously analyze the source-language text before actually translating, they significantly reduce the likelihood of mistranslations. This workshop addresses problems that arise in translating challenging texts, including analyzing the deeper meaning of sentences, paragraphs, and whole texts; translating meaning, rather than words and grammatical structures; and handling problem terminology.
