Translators work with the written word, transferring text from a source language into a target language. Interpreters work with the spoken word, transferring speech from a source language into a target language.

ATA Certification is a testament to a translator's professional competence in translating from one specific language into another. The certification examination tests the language skills of a professional translator: comprehension of the source-language text, translation techniques, and writing in the target language.

The examination does not test interpreting skills.

Active/Corresponding
An individual ATA member who has passed an ATA certification exam or has been approved by Active membership review. Members in these two categories are listed as "voting" members

Associate
An individual ATA member.

Charter
An original ATA member.

Honorary
An individual ATA member who has distinguished him/herself in the translation and interpretation professions and has been recognized by the ATA Board of Directors for the distinguished service.

Life/Voting or Life/Associate
An individual ATA member who has reached 60 years of age and who has been a member of the Association for at least 20 consecutive years.
