Translating French Financial Statements into English

• This presentation will focus on the intricacies of translating French financial statements into English. After a brief comparison of US GAAP and IAS, current French and EC legislation pertaining to French financial reporting will be presented based on published financial statements. How the level of specialized knowledge directly affects the translation of such documents will be illustrated with samples taken from French annual reports and prospectuses translated into English. Examples from French financial statements prepared directly in English and based on US GAAP will also be analyzed. Particular attention will be paid to how this highly specialized terminology is reflected in most bilingual dictionaries and what to do when they fail to provide a correct translation.
