Challenges of Translating French Financial Terminology into English

• This paper focuses on the difficulties of translating certain French financial terms into English, difficulties ranging from differences in the concept underlying the term to "false friends".

• The examples are drawn from a variety of banking documents: financial statements, credit applications, risk assessments, guarantees, audit reports, etc., translated during 12 years of working for a French bank in New York.

• This presentation targets the challenges of translating terms which are not only hard to grasp for the English speaker, but which can also change meaning depending on the context.

• Finally, this paper will touch upon the translation of some French financial abbreviations and of some English terms "imported" into French, often with a slight change of meaning.
