Challenges of Translating French Financial Terminology into English
This paper focuses on the difficulties of translating certain French financial terms into English, difficulties ranging from differences in the concept underlying the term to "false friends".
The examples are drawn from a variety of banking documents: financial statements, credit applications, risk assessments, guarantees, audit reports, etc., translated during 12 years of working for a French bank in New York.
This presentation targets the challenges of translating terms which are not only hard to grasp for the English speaker, but which can also change meaning depending on the context.
Finally, this paper will touch upon the translation of some French financial abbreviations and of some English terms "imported" into French, often with a slight change of meaning.
