Research Techniques and Primary Resources for Technical Translators

Aaron Ruby

This presentation will review resources and research techniques for technical translators working in the oil and gas industry. The speaker will introduce manuals, primers, technical standards, glossaries, and dictionaries, as well as techniques for researching technical terms and finding primary texts in source and target languages. The presentation will be non-language-specific, but some examples will be provided in Spanish, which will also serve other language combinations. Attendees will receive related glossaries, manuals, and materials in the public domain, as well as lists of resources and publications available.

Environmental Aspects of Energy Production and Consumption

Patricia Bobeck

This presentation will cover the environmental effects of energy production and consumption. Topics will include the environmental consequences of mining, power generation and distribution, and petroleum production, refining, and distribution. We will discuss the different environmental consequences stemming from the use of coal, lignite, uranium, and petroleum. In addition, petroleum distribution, storage, and marketing lead to environmental effects that differ from the combustion of these products. We will discuss air, soil, and groundwater pollution, nuclear waste, and global issues such as climate change. The discussion will include examples of environmental terminology and translation resources in English and French.

Oil Well Drilling: Before, During, and After, Part I

Luis Téllez

This presentation will provide a general introduction to the drilling of an oil well, including all activities that are performed before and after a well is drilled. It will cover both land and offshore drilling practices from exploration to completion. Basic, non-technical information and definitions will be provided for the activities that take place before a well is drilled, including rock mechanics, reservoirs, determining the location of a well, and reservoir fluids. This presentation will move on to the drilling phase, illustrating such topics as site preparation, rig up, normal drilling operations, and the many components of a rig from the crown block, to the bit, and everything in between. The last phase of an oil well will also be discussed—from the moment the drilling is finished, to the time when the well no longer produces. The topics covered in this phase will include the types of recovery, drives, pressure decline, well completion, stimulation, sand control, coiled tubing, and abandon. This presentation will help attendees have a better understanding of the activities associated with the life of an oil well.

Unit Operations: The Heart of the Chemical Plant, Part I

This presentation is aimed at translators with a scientific background (e.g.: chemists, physicists, etc.) and other lay translators who regularly work around chemical industry topics, but do not have a clear understanding of the practical workings of a chemical or petrochemical plant. The objective of the presentation is to provide participants a clear, but not too technical, explanation on how key chemical machinery (i.e. "unit operations" in the industry jargon) work by providing actual practical examples in the production of key petrochemical, chemical, and biochemical products. The unit operations that would be covered include, among others, distillation towers, reactors, heat exchangers, fermenters, liquid-liquid extraction, centrifuges, filtration equipment, adsorption equipment, dryers, and fluid beds. As a backdrop, the following manufacturing processes would be covered: aromatics (benzene, toluene, and xylenes), polyethylene, ethanol, penicillin, azoic pigments, crude oil distillation, and possibly one or two more petrochemicals. The presentation will cover such key concepts as: heat, mass, and momentum transfer; heat and mass balances; endothermic and exothermic reactions; catalysis, azeotropes, and azeotropic distillation; adsorption vs. absorption; etc.

The Nuclear Fuel Cycle

The objective of this session is to provide general concepts and vocabulary concerning every aspect of nuclear power, and to cover some of the environmental (global warming), economic (energy independence), and social (public acceptance) issues. The first session will provide an overview of nuclear fuel and nuclear waste. Beginning with a diagram of the “nuclear fuel cycle,” the processing steps leading up to nuclear fuel fabrication will be explained and illustrated with photos, as will those that follow the use of the fuel in the reactor: uranium mining and milling, uranium conversion and enrichment, nuclear fuel fabrication, spent fuel reprocessing, fabrication of recycled nuclear fuel, spent fuel storage, and spent fuel and/or nuclear waste disposal. The issue of non-proliferation raised by enrichment and reprocessing will also be addressed. Although this session is non-language-specific, attendees will receive a French>English glossary and French-specific questions are welcome.

Oilfield Operations and Technology, Part I

This presentation is intended to provide background and context for documents commonly presented for translation, to new and experienced translators alike. A focus is made on terms that have meanings in this industry that are different from those in general usage. This presentation will begin with an overview of the historically used methods of finding and extracting oil and gas. Techniques used by oil geologists before the advent of today's seismic and geophysical instruments and analysis will be described. Descriptions will be provided of rotary drilling, downhole turbines, directional and horizontal drilling, well servicing, and workover operations. This presentation will review the fundamental requirements for the accumulation of hydrocarbon deposits, including: source or generator rock, seal or cap rock, structural traps, timing of maturation, and migration to reservoir rocks; surface and downhole completion techniques; and stages of production, natural flow, artificial lift, and stimulation. This presentation will conclude with an introduction to the theory and controversy surrounding "Peak Oil" and its consequences for society.

Offshore Oil and Gas Platforms, Part I

Increasingly, hydrocarbons discoveries are found offshore and in deeper waters. Offshore platforms are an important part of the petroleum industry throughout the world and represent a large component of oil and gas translation work today. Using images, diagrams, explanations, and definitions, this presentation will describe different kinds of offshore platforms, their parts, how they are fabricated, transported, and positioned offshore. The presentation will provide terminology for beginners and experienced translators, including: jacket and topsides fabrication, loadout, seafastening, transportation, launching, positioning-founding, mating, and hookup. Various idioms and slang will focus on Pemex projects in the Gulf of Mexico—which represent the bulk of translation work in the U.S.— but offshore oil and gas terms used in a number of Latin American countries (Venezuela, Colombia, and Argentina) will also be addressed. While Spanish translations will be provided, the presentation will be completely accessible to all translators. Glossaries and reference materials will be provided.

Ethics and Standards of Practice for Technical Interpreters, Part I

Codes of ethics have been developed for interpreters working in the judicial system, at international conferences, and most recently, in the healthcare field. Given that a code of ethics has not been developed for interpreters working in the energy field, which code of ethics most closely applies to technical interpreters? Technical interpreters sometimes step out of the conduit role of interpreting to take on a role of a cultural broker, as do healthcare interpreters, so should the healthcare interpreters code of ethics and standards of practice apply to technical interpreters? What about neutrality when one side has hired the interpreter during contract negotiations? This interactive panel session will explore the complex world of technical interpreters and begin a discussion among interpreters working in the field on topics such as protocol and ethical responsibilites.

Nuclear Reactors

This session will cover nuclear power generation, beginning with an overview of reactor types, from the early gas-graphite reactors to present-day pressurized and boiling water reactors (PWRs, BWRs) to the Generation III reactors now under construction to the fusion reactors that are the subject of an international research program. The concepts behind power generation will be explained. Information on the status of nuclear power programs around the world will be presented (number of plants in operation, under construction or planned; percentage of national electricity generated by nuclear power). Reactor safety will be addressed, with references to Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. Although this session is non-language-specific, attendees will receive a French>English glossary and French-specific questions are welcome.

Energy industry translations often involve equipment units necessary for the construction of facilities and their functioning. Project equipment specifications and manuals represent an important part of a technical translatorís duties. Construction equipment includes lifting and handling devices such as cranes, elevators and rigging, earth movers, and many hand tools. Compressors and pumps are the fundamental units of oilfield production. All projects require power, and the prime movers often include piston engines and turbines. This presentation will provide a basic overview of some of these equipment units, their parts, and their functions. The speaker will discuss resources and methods for understanding unfamiliar terms and resolving translation issues related to the industry. In addition, examples of dramatic idiomatic variations by Spanish-speaking regions and countries will be examined. Handouts will include glossaries, resource listings, and other support materials.

Outline of the Upstream Oil and Gas Industry, Part I

"Upstream" in Oil and Gas terminology signifies everything from the very first magnetometer survey of a prospective basin to placing an oil or gas field in production. As such, it subdivides fairly neatly into four parts: 1) general theory of oil and gas formation, definition of the parameters critical to formation of exploitable oil and gas reserves, and the various types of traps; 2) surveying and mapping technologies, including magnetometer and seismic surveys and their processing and interpretation; 3) drilling engineering (drill strings, drill bits, drilling mud control, well control, and well workovers); and 4) well logging (reservoir and production engineering including directional drilling). This presentation will be oriented toward giving a general overview of theory and methodology. If time and interest allow, a fifth topic will be covered on well fishing operations and other miscellaneous topics such as economics. Each section of the presentation will be provided with numerous graphics to illustrate the concepts and basic terminology in English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Online Documentation as a Terminology Source in the Energy Sector

Sources of oil and gas and nuclear power terminology available online are reviewed and discussed in the context of technical and legal translation into target languages (other than English). These include traditional dictionaries and glossaries in online form and pertinent online documentation, such as legislative and regulatory acts of the host country, international treaties and agreements, multilingual websites of international organizations, international terminological standards and terminological databases, terminological recommendations by international associations and trade organizations, domestic terminological standards and terminological databases of the host country, scientific and technical publications, industrial and corporate sources, domestic government sources, special sources (experts, information specialists, weblogs, and personal web pages), as well as secondary information sources (journals of abstracts and web link collections). Certain search tools for terminology identification and verification will be discussed from a translator's perspective. The terminological sources are categorized in terms of their value and accuracy. Examples of English/Russian online terminological resources are provided to illustrate each category.

Exploring for Oil And Gas: The Work of Geologists and Geophysicists

Geologists and geophysicists play a major part in the exploration for oil and gas. Geologists are professionals who study the earth, but petroleum geologists are those who specialize in the exploration and development of oil and gas reservoirs by studying the rocks and their history. There is yet another group of geologists, called development geologists who search for new oil and gas fields. Petroleum geologists then apply different techniques and resources in order to identify a potential petroleum reservoir. They usually make different maps to study the surface as well as the subsurface of the earth. With those maps they can place themselves on the ground and view what lies beneath it and try to identify fossils, different types of rocks, source rock, reservoir rock, and mainly “structural and stratigraphic traps”. They also utilize “cross sections” (well log correlations), logs (well records), and samples extracted from the wellbore (cuttings, cores, and sidewall cores), all leading to the discovery of a petroleum reservoir. Geophysicists are other professionals who work in the exploration phase, but who apply physics and mathematics to study the earth. They basically use three methods: gravity, magnetics, and seismic (sound energy) to explore the subsurface. This presentation will explain the daily work of geologists and geophysicists in the challenging task of exploring for oil and gas. Terminology exercises will be given out to all attendees.

A Primer on Oil and Gas Law Terms in French and English

So you think you know what force majeure is, but how would you translate a Mother Hubbard clause? This presentation—that will introduce the legal concepts particular to oil and gas contracts, mineral rights, and the economics of hydrocarbon production—may help you do just that. Translators working with legal documents for oil and gas operations must master the technical terminology applicable to this industry, but they must also have a general understanding of the rules and laws which govern oil and gas leases, royalties, and land ownership in this context. Particular attention will be given to the language of oil and gas contracts and of environmental regulations in English and French.

This presentation will focus on the main aspects of the refining process, providing practical examples which will be further clarified by illustrations and concrete case studies. If you have always had an interest in the refining industry but felt that you lacked the necessary technical know-how, this presentation will provide you with the basic tools to understand topics including crude characteristics, oil chemistry, oil refining, catalytic cracking, catalytic reforming, hydrocracking, residual fuel, aromatics, gas condensate, and a variety of related areas which will help you begin your exploration of this field with great confidence, as well as with a broad understanding of all the elements involved.

The Challenges with Translation of Oil and Gas Flow Metering

This presentation is mainly targeted to an audience without a technical background, but with a strong interest in exploring the field of translation of petroleum materials. We will analyze the most common translation mistakes encountered by inexperienced professionals when working in this sector, discuss the most common terminology, and finally, provide an overview of good practices in order to avoid mistranslations and lack of technical accuracy. The discussion will center on oil and gas flow metering materials, including flow meters, units of measurement, parameters, flow metering techniques, and related equipment. Flow meters are used in a variety of industries, including oil and gas production, processing, and refineries. Terminology related to pipelines, fittings, valves, and measuring devices will also be discussed as it pertains to the general topic. Finally, we will address specific issues that arise for professionals in the Russian language, who have the added responsibility of ensuring that their work, not only reflects the most commonly accepted terminology for this field, but also adheres to the codes and standards of the Russian Federation.

Plataformas, torres y taladros: terminologia de produccion petrolera en español

Steven Mines (Presenting Languages: English and Spanish)

If you’re curious to know what it means to Nipple up the B.O.P., then this workshop is for you! Translating technical references and jargon used in the oil industry presents many unique challenges. Exploration and production activities generally involve multinational companies where English may be the dominant language of business transactions, but not the dominant language of the workforce. Drilling operators and service contractors face the challenge of effectively training and managing this multilingual workforce. In addition to the basic terminology of oil rigs and drilling equipment, this workshop will review basic environmental and safety terminology that are frequently encountered in the industry. The workshop material will draw on the presenter’s experience in training classes and translations for oil services companies in Africa and Latin America.

Oil and Gas Interpreting: From Negotiations to Exploration and Production

This presentation will look at solutions for the linguistic challenges that arise during simultaneous interpreting in international contract negotiations, geological presentations, and technical budget meetings. The presenter will discuss several complex examples with the audience, and distribute a Spanish/English glossary specific to the oil and gas industry. The session will be presented in English but all specific examples will be geared towards English<>Spanish interpreters.

Chemical Engineering and Processes: A Mini-glossary Resulting from a Basic Understanding of Specific Topics, Part I

Starting from the principle that chemical engineering deals with matter and all forms of energy to achieve large-scale chemical production and the manufacture of products through chemical processes, the presentation will focus on terminology issues relevant to this purpose. The presentation will be mostly practical, based on texts in English selected with the advice of experienced chemical engineers. The specific terminology in the texts presented will be applicable to many segments of chemical engineering, however, the texts will not be general but highly specific. Through context analysis, pictures, diagrams, and exchange of opinions about Spanish options, if applicable, one of the goals will be to provide translators with the minimum topic-specific knowledge required to deliver a terminologically accurate text in Spanish. The final purpose will be to give the attendants the opportunity to build their own mini-glossary.

Technical Terminology and Other Mistakes in the Translation of Petroleum Industry Reports

Fabián D'Andrea (Presenting Languages: English and Spanish)

This presentation will analyze the translation of different paragraphs of geology reports pertaining to the petroleum industry, in which serious technical terminology and other mistakes are made by the translator, mainly due to the lack of knowledge of the industry specific subject and the technical terminology. Misused terminology to be analyzed includes: false cognates (English-Spanish), terms not utilized in the technical jargon, choice of words, and punctuation. First, a translator who translates a technical report of any specific industry should focus on the fact that English and Spanish are two very different origin languages and that both are spoken in countries with different cultures and histories. Therefore, it must be considered that there exists no equivalent for all the technical terms in the other language. Sometimes, a term has a possible equivalent but, due to the widespread use by the technical people, it is kept in the original language. What should the translator do then? Which term should the translator use? How do we judge in which case a term should be translated or in which case it should be kept in the original language? It is very common that a translator asks himself all these questions if he does not have a vast knowledge of the subject he is about to translate. Handouts with the paragraphs analyzed and glossary will be given to participants.

The Downstream Industry: Petroleum Refining

The petroleum refinery is the key installation in the downstream sector of the oil and gas industry in which crude oil is converted to products such as gasoline, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas, fuel oils, asphalt, petroleum coke, and lubricants. This workshop is intended as an overview of the refining industry. Topics to be discussed include plant layout and drawings, unit placement, piping, valves, blinds, and nozzles, as well as plant equipment such as furnaces, distillation towers, cracking units, cokers, separators, and flares. The safety and environmental concerns of the refining industry will be also addressed. The workshop will include a discussion of heavy and extraheavy crude refining technologies. These types of crude require a higher investment in refining processes in order to produce marketable products. However, with higher oil prices and dwindling supplies of lighter crude, refining of heavier crude is now playing a more important role in the industry. This workshop will include examples in English and Spanish of refinery-related terminology and research issues.
