Em uma sessão prática, vou traduzir, em tempo real, alguns trechos variados, almejando a fidelidade, a correção e a naturalidade. Os trechos serão amostras típicas de artigos de jornalismo financeiro e geral, de livros de ficção e não-ficção. Será um passo-a-passo do trabalho, mostrando o Google Translate e diversas técnicas de pesquisa no Google não muito conhecidas, além de recursos do Word para economizar tempo e digitação. O objetivo é obter uma tradução de alta qualidade e consistência, trabalhando com mais produtividade, menos desperdício de tempo e trabalho repetitivo. Os participantes receberão os textos a serem traduzidos antes do webinar para melhor aproveitamento.

Rolling Up Your Sleeves: Online Resources for English-into-Portuguese Research and Translation

The goal of this 60-minute webinar is to demonstrate how to obtain a high-quality, consistent translation while saving time on repetitive work. During the webinar, presenter Isa Mara Lando will translate several texts in real time, focusing on faithfulness, correctness, and naturalness. The texts will be typical samples of financial and general news as well as fiction and non-fiction works. Working step-by-step, she will demonstrate the practical use of Google Translate and other less well known Google search techniques to save time and improve productivity. Time-saving resources for Microsoft Word will also be presented.

The texts to be translated will be sent to registered attendees in advance of the webinar so they will be familiar with the translation issues found in each.


About the Presenter

Isa Mara Lando is an experienced teacher and lecturer who holds a B.A. in English Language and Literature from São Paulo PUC University. She was the the Portuguese Language Division's distinguished guest speaker at ATA's 46th Annual Conference in Seattle, Washington.

Since 1986, Isa has translated over 100 books, including more than 30 for Companhia das Letras. Her recent translations have included George Orwell’s The Road to Wigan Pier and Walter Isaacson’s Einstein—His Life and Universe. She has also translated numerous articles for Time, Harvard Business Review, National Geographic Magazine, and many other well-known publications. Currently, Isa translates financial articles for The Wall Street Journal on a daily basis.

She is the author of VocabuLando—Vocabulário Prático Inglês-Português, a dictionary with more than 2,000 entries covering Brazilian translation difficulties, and the accompanying VocabuLando Workbook of Translation Exercises. More than 7,000 copies of VocabuLando have been sold since 1999.
