How to Get the Mentoring You Need

Presenter:   Courtney Searls-Ridge
Date:    March 22 , 2011
Time:   12 noon Eastern Time
Duration:   60 minutes
CE Point(s):    1
Handout:    ATA Mentoring Program Worksheets

Mentoring. How difficult can it be? Certainly it's not something you need to be taught! But in fact, unrealistic-and often unspoken-expectations, lack of any firm time commitment, and a failure to set goals can doom the chances for a successful mentoring relationship.

This session is a requirement for ATA members interested in becoming a mentor or mentee in ATA's Mentoring Program. However, you do not need to be an ATA member to attend this webinar.

In this free 60-minute webinar, attendees will learn
  • Ways to approach mentoring and find a mentor
  • Goal-setting strategies within a mentoring relationship
  • Do's and don'ts to avoid potential problems
  • How ATA's Mentoring Program works

About the Presenter

Courtney Searls-Ridge was trained as a translator/interpreter in Hamburg, Germany. She worked as translation manager for a multi-language company before going freelance as a German to English translator specializing in pharmaceutical patents. In 1979, she started German Language Services where she developed an internship program. In 2005, Courtney sold GLS to one of her former mentees.

Courtney is co-founder of the T&I Institute in Washington state where she has been teaching Ethics and Business Practices for Translators and Interpreters since 1992. She served on the ATA Board of Directors from 1995-2003 and chairs the ATA Mentoring Program. Her current passion is developing curricula to teach T&I skills to heritage language high school students.
