Medical interpreter training often focuses on terminology and medical background knowledge, but often there is a lot more going on than words in a cross-cultural patient-provider encounter.

Join us for this 60-minute webinar to examine the daily ethical dilemmas health care interpreters face. Real-world case studies in both hospital and out-patient settings will be used to illustrate possible approaches to resolving problems.

About the Presenter

Elena Langdon Fortier is the supervisor of Interpreter and Translation Services at Baystate Medical Center, an academic, research, and teaching hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts. She oversees a staff of 45 interpreters and translators. Prior to working at Baystate, Elena was a freelance interpreter and translator (Portuguese<>English).

She is an ATA-certified translator (Portuguese>English) and holds an MA in Translation Studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass).

Elena has been teaching interpreting and translation since 2005 at several educational institutions, including UMass and Boston University. She is also Chair of the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters and Administrator of the ATA Portuguese Language Division.

Born in the United States, Elena grew up in Florianópolis, Brazil, where her mother and brother still live.
