SUMMARY:CLD Café: Bringing Your I to AI - The Rapidly Changing Technology Landscape in Language Services
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence is playing an ever-increasing role in the language services industry. Everyone—from individual translators and interpreters to the CEOs of the largest language services companies—is struggling to adapt to a future increasingly driven by AI and by customers’ expectations for radical new solutions. It is crucial to be aware of the current state of technology\, how it is being used\, and what the future holds for you as a language professional. \nBy attending this event\, you will learn about NMT\, large language models\, and generative AI in a way that is understandable to non-techies from a leading expert in the field. You will learn how these technologies are being used in translation and localization\, and gain insight into the kinds of centrally important roles for language professionals that are in demand as these technologies are applied more broadly. \nAbout the Speaker\nJay Marciano has spent more than 27 years at the forefront of developing\, applying\, and explaining machine translation (MT). He has held senior positions at Transparent Language (1998-2001)\, SDL (2001-2010) and Lionbridge (2010-2020)\, where he was responsible for the global strategy of using MT to increase translation efficiency\, and at Lengoo\, where he was deeply involved in the creation of an AI product strategy. Jay is president of the Association for Machine Translation in the Americas (AMTA) and the International Association for Machine Translation (IAMT) and presents widely on MT\, AI\, and the future of the translation industry.

SUMMARY:Translation Techniques: From Brief Theory to Intensive Practice (EnglishSpanish)
DESCRIPTION:Translators are accountable for their translations. This workshop will provide tools to choose the right techniques for the best human and AI-generated translations.\nIn this workshop\, the process goes from very brief theoretical content to intensive practice. As professional translators\, we make innumerable decisions in our daily work\, and must account for them! Clients will be happy if they ask why\, and translators can provide clear answers beyond doubt. This will happen only if translators are familiar with translation techniques and able to choose the right one for each case. Also\, more than one potential solution might arise for a single case\, and it’s up to knowledgeable translators to choose the best. If they wish to foster professional growth\, not being well-trained is not an option. \nJoin this workshop to explore theoretical concepts such as borrowing\, calque\, literal translation\, transposition\, modulation\, equivalence\, adaptation\, reduction\, expansion\, recognized translation\, re-semanticization\, and transcreation\, and apply them to dozens of practical examples that will help you understand concepts clearly and grasp the intended meaning. You’ll also learn what can be omitted\, changed\, or added\, and how and when to do it safely. Justified translation enhances professional growth and credibility. \nBy attending this workshop\, you will:\n\nLearn or refresh translation techniques.\nGain a deep understanding of concepts.\nApply concepts to everyday examples.\nGrow more confident in your own judgment.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nLiliana Bernardita Mariotto is a certified translator and retired certified university professor. She graduated from Buenos Aires University both as a certified translator and a university lecturer. SUMMARY:ATA TEKTalks: EZDocuAI Versus Your Ugliest PDF—OCR\, Layout\, and Translation
DESCRIPTION:Have a difficult PDF? See how EZDocuAI tackles challenging PDFs with OCR\, layout reconstruction\, and translation.\nSome documents never make it into your CAT tool: a crooked scan\, a handwritten certificate\, a form packed with tables\, seals\, and signature blocks. The translation itself is the easy part. Rebuilding the document is what eats your afternoon. This session is about that afternoon. \nRoberto Rodríguez\, CEO and co-founder of EZDocuAI\, will take real documents from scan to delivery—live. He’ll cover OCR for scanned and handwritten files\, automatic layout reconstruction\, and converting PDFs into editable files while preserving the original formatting. \nIn this webinar\, you will learn:\n\nHow OCR handles scanned and handwritten documents in practice\, what it reads reliably\, and where tables\, faded stamps\, and cursive still need your careful review.\nHow layout reconstruction rebuilds a PDF into an editable file that preserves the original formatting so tables\, seals\, and signature blocks are not retyped by hand.\nHow to measure the part of your day that is not translation using a single number: time to first editable file.\nTwo ways to work after reconstruction: export the editable document and translate in the tool you already trust\, or work in one screen with the original and the translation side by side.\nWhat to ask any vendor about your clients’ documents: retention\, deletion\, and model training. We’ll also explain Zero Knowledge Processing and why your files are deleted after export.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nRoberto Rodriguez is a mechanical engineer and entrepreneur. Originally from Barranquilla (COL)\, he immigrated to the U.S. and built his career at the intersection of artificial intelligence and business consulting\, helping companies integrate AI into their daily operations. While working across industries\, he noticed that professional translators\, despite being essential to global communication\, had been largely overlooked by the tech world. That gap became his mission. He founded EZDocuAI\, a platform built specifically for translators\, after spending months listening to their frustrations\, understanding their workflows\, and learning what they actually needed. He believes technology should serve\, not replace\, people\, and that translators deserve tools designed with their expertise in mind.\n  \n\n  \nWhat is ATA TEKTalks?\nLanguage technology\, or lang tech for short\, can feel like a confusing maze\, evolving daily. If you’ve ever felt “LOC’d out” of all the excitement—or just overwhelmed—it’s time to grab your compass and assume your place as a tech-savvy linguist! \nATA’s Language Technology Division is pleased to present ATA TEKTalks\, a quarterly series of webinars. ATA TEKTalks provides a platform for leading language technology companies to say hello\, offer insights\, and answer questions relevant to the work of freelancers\, language services providers\, and in-house translation departments. \nThink of ATA TEKTalks as an open exchange of information where language technology companies and their representatives demonstrate how and why their services can improve your return on investment. \nThis webinar series is organized in collaboration with ATA’s Language Technology Division.

SUMMARY:The Iceberg Advantage: Uncovering Your High-Value Translation Niche
DESCRIPTION:Stop competing in a crowded market and start commanding expert rates by turning your unique background and expertise into a high-demand\, AI-resistant translation niche.\nAs AI reshapes the translation market\, language professionals must focus on areas where human expertise\, judgment\, and specialized knowledge remain essential. This webinar will help you identify and build a profitable niche that sets you apart. \nExplore the “Iceberg Model” of personal business\, where much of your value comes from specialized knowledge that clients may not recognize until you learn how to position and market it. You’ll discover how to identify your non-linguistic strengths—from professional experience in fields like medicine and law to specialized interests and hobbies—and use them to create a “Translator Plus” profile. \nBy focusing on high-value sectors such as healthcare\, legal\, and brand-sensitive industries\, you’ll learn how to attract clients who value expertise\, reliability\, and risk reduction over low-cost solutions. This webinar provides practical strategies for researching markets\, defining your ideal client\, and optimizing your online presence to stand out in an AI-driven industry. \nBy attending this webinar\, you will learn how to:\n\nConduct a “7 Talents” Audit to uncover unique skills and experiences that can become a valuable specialization.\nIdentify profitable sub-niches by moving from broad fields to targeted areas with less competition.\nCreate a Buyer Persona to better understand potential clients\, their challenges\, and their decision-making priorities.\nDevelop a “Human-in-the-Loop” sales strategy that communicates the value of specialized human expertise.\nOptimize your LinkedIn profile and online presence to establish authority in your chosen niche.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nMaria Emilia Labaca blends a deep academic background with over a decade of experience navigating the linguistic landscape of the United States. Originally from Argentina\, she spent six years in California\, where she studied linguistics at San Francisco State University and earned a specialized certification in translation from the University of California San Diego. A pivotal moment in her early career was being mentored by ATA Past President Corinne McKay in 2012\, which helped shape her perspective on the business side of the industry. \nHer professional path is as diverse as it is specialized\, ranging from documenting Indigenous languages in Oaxaca\, Mexico\, to spending 10 years as a senior project manager and editor for a California-based agency. After refining the strategies that helped her land high-profile direct clients in the wellness space\, including The Glucose Goddess\, she cofounded W Studio Translations alongside her longtime colleague\, Gimena de Ibarra. Beyond her translation work\, Maria Emilia is a dedicated educator\, having served as the academic coordinator for the Technical-Scientific Translation program at the Instituto Superior CEM and as a professor guiding students through the realities of professional practice.
