Humor\, irony\, technical terms\, reasoning\, emphasis\, abbreviations\, quotes\, ambiguities\, and the like are all expertly conveyed and we leave the booth with our head held high. \nHowever\, in the real world\, this is far from always the case even for stellar interpreters. The less experienced you are\, the more often you will find it impossible to deliver a hundred percent on the legitimate demands of the delegates; or as an experienced practitioner\, you may decide that brevity better serves communication in a particular case. This is when you need to apply DCM! \nIn this webinar\, you will begin learning how to:\n\nRemain in charge in every situation in the booth.\nPrioritize and prune\, using concision and accuracy to gain “brain space.”\nHonor and convey the true meaning and reasoning of your speakers.\nBuild interpreting resilience and professionalism.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nChris Guichot de Fortis is a member of the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) with an MA from Cambridge University and an MA in conference interpreting (University of Bath). He was a professional tennis player and served 10 years in the British police. He worked as a NATO interpreter during 1988-2021\, and for 10 years organized the NATO recruitment tests and training program for interpreting students. He has organized volunteer interpreter teams for several non-governmental organizations. He has taught or examined in a dozen schools and is chair of the Belgian AIIC Trainers’ Network (BANT). He now works as a freelancer and coaches interpreters\, mainly for B-language improvement and for tests in international organizations.

DESCRIPTION:Explore strategies for constructive feedback and deliberate practice in this interactive webinar\, focusing on refining interpreting skills through guided reflection\, repetition\, and collaboration.\nInterpreting expertise cannot be achieved by simply working as an interpreter for a long time. Deliberate practice is needed to attain expertise\, and two of the cornerstones of deliberate practice are constructive feedback and repetition. This webinar will help you develop tools to increase the value of the feedback you give to yourself and colleagues. You will be given a rubric to use when giving yourself or others feedback and practice giving constructive\, well-argued feedback for interpreters. \nDuring the session\, you will interpret a short example scenario while recording yourself\, and then you will reflect on your recordings and repeat the scenario to improve. This will give you time to actively apply what you learn during the webinar. You will also receive temporary two-month access to Terp\, an interactive platform for practicing interpreting. You will receive instructions on how to complete practice sessions on Terp and send these practice sessions (which will include recordings of your interpretations) to colleagues to request feedback from them.
