SUMMARY:Is Machine Translation Ever the Right Tool for the Job?
DESCRIPTION:Machine translation is not an easy technology to love.\nBut it is possible to like on occasion And no matter what\, translators need to be able to discuss the issue when clients bring it up. \nThis 60-minute webinar explores the characteristics that help define a job as suitable for machine translation. Real-world successes (and failures) illustrate when human-only\, machine-only\, or some combination of both is appropriate for a customer’s goals. \nLearn the decision points in client discussions\n\nStrengths and limitations\nPractical applications\nCost savings\nTranslation speed\nPost editing requirements\n\nAbout the Presenter\nLaurie Gerber has worked in the field of machine translation since 1986. Her career has included system development (Systran)\, research (USC Information Sciences Institute)\, business development (Language Weaver)\, and business development and technology (Syntes Language Group). \nShe has been a member of ATA since 1989 and was certified in Japanese into English in 1991. Laurie is also a member of the Association for Machine Translation in the Americas (AMTA) and a past president of both AMTA and its parent association\, the International Association for Machine Translation (IAMT). \nLaurie holds master’s degrees in East Asian Studies (Yale 1982) and Computational Linguistics (University of Southern California 2001).
