SUMMARY:Setting Up a Termbase: What Does It Take?
DESCRIPTION:Setting up a termbase is an investment of time\, but the result is a huge payoff down the road. You’ll ensure consistent terminology throughout your translation\, avoid researching concepts over and over again\, and efficiently track specific instructions from your clients. \nIf you decide to take on this project\, you’ll want to know everything you can about terminology management systems (TMS) before you start. This webinar is a good first step. \nTermbase guru Barbara Karsh begins with how to prepare to set up a TMS in a generic translation environment. Next she takes a close look at TMS structure\, the core element of a good system. Finally\, she examines the catalog of data categories (DCs) and ties up the most commonly used under the TMS structure. \nWhat Will You Learn?\n\nHow to plan for setting up a termbase\nUnderstanding of terminology management system structure\nNames of major free resources for standardized fields\nHow to analyze the needs for your environment\nDecisions you’ll need to make in setting up your termbase\n\nAbout the Presenter\nBarbara Inge Karsch is the owner of BIK Terminology\, a terminology consultancy and training company. \nSince 2010\, she has provided terminology training\, terminology development\, and implementations of terminology management systems for Microsoft\, Intel\, Facebook\, the Council of the EU\, and others. As a consultant\, she draws on her extensive experience working in house terminologist (English and German) for Microsoft and J.D. Edwards. \nBarbara earned both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in translation and interpretation. She has also done PhD-level research in terminology management. She is an adjunct instructor at New York University and has taught at KU Leuven at Antwerp\, Belgium\, Middlebury Institute at Monterey\, and the University of Washington.

SUMMARY:Agencies vs. Freelancers? A Market Analysis
DESCRIPTION:The last three decades have seen significant change in how translators\, interpreters\, and agencies work. \nLess formal\, part-time translators and interpreters have given way to better trained\, full-time professionals\, while agencies are morphing into major corporations. Technology and internationalization have given freelancers the tools to work globally\, as agencies are going high-tech and controlling a larger share of the market. \nHave these movements in our industry created an “us vs. them” mentality? Are agencies and freelancers destined to be at odds with one another? \nIt’s time to analyze where we are in the present in order to plan for where we could be in the future! \nThis webinar will analyze the following market trends:\n\nTechnology and globalization have expanded the language services market\, changing the landscape for freelancers and agencies alike.\nWhile individual freelancers can now offer services worldwide\, they must compete globally\, even if they can’t meet all the market’s needs.\nAgencies exist because of transactions costs and demand for their services; they thrive because they operate cost-effectively.\nMost agencies are small businesses\, but a few large LSPs have considerable market share and are relying more and more on technology.\nAgencies and freelancers can successfully coexist\, but they need to prepare for change and understand what motivates the other side.\n\nAbout the presenters\nJohn M. Milan is an ATA-certified translator\, economist\, writer\, and lecturer with over 20 years of experience in language services. \nHe holds a Master of Science in Microeconomics from the Ohio State University\, where he was a Foreign Language and Area Studies fellow. He specialized in Portuguese translation during his graduate. \nJohn served on the Carolina Association of Translators and Interpreters’s Board of Directors for eight years and served as the chapter’s president from 2013-20. He is currently the Treasurer on ATA’s Board of Directors and has been on the finance and audit committee since 2015. \nHe has been a member of the ATA Finance and Audit Committee since 2015 and is currently serving as the Association’s Treasurer. \nMichael Collins has been active in technical translation and localization for over 30 years. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona\, majoring in Russian and German\, and a master’s degree in Slavic Linguistics from UNC Chapel Hill. He also studied at the university level in Germany and Yugoslavia. \nMike is ATA-certified German>English and Russian>English translator. He is the author of numerous articles and presentations on translation and the translation industry. He currently works as a freelance translator. \nHe is the past president of Global Translation Systems\, Inc. as well as the past president of the Carolina Association of Translators and Interpreters.
