Because this market has no actual licensing of translators\, there can be a great deal of confusion among new and veteran translators alike as to how to approach requests for certified translations. \nThis webinar will explore the ins and outs of how certified and non-certified translators are able to issue certification statements for their work. We will also explore the certification requirements established by various states and judicial authorities for written translations. \nYou will learn how to:\n\nDetermine if you can certify a translation that you’ve edited yourself.\nExplore certification options beyond ATA for U.S.-based translators.\nNavigate the process of obtaining an apostille for a certified translation.\nFind out in which cases certification statements need to be notarized.\nUnderstand the role of a notary public signing and affixing their official seal on the certification statement.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nRobert Sette\, CT has worked as a professional translator for over 30 years and holds ATA certification in Spanish\, French\, Portuguese\, and Italian into English\, in addition to working from Catalan into English. He has lived and studied languages and linguistics in Spain\, France\, and Russia. He specializes in commercial\, legal\, and technical translation. He is currently serving on ATA’s Board of Directors and is president of the Colorado Interpreters and Translators Association. He serves as a mentor for new\, aspiring translators\, and he has previously taught translation at the University of Pittsburgh and Kent State University. He is a frequent speaker at local conferences\, as well as conferences hosted by ATA and the European Language Industry Association.

Her expertise encompasses a broad range of fields\, including business\, legal\, and technical translations. Jill collaborates with native speakers to provide translation services in European\, Japanese\, and Korean languages. Her dedication to continuous learning led her to proficiency in Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools such as Trados and memoQ\, as well as in machine translation post-editing (MTPE). Specializing in marketing\, legal\, and quality issues\, she is a member of ASTM (TC F43 on Language Services and Products)\, ACES\, PLAIN\, and ATA’s Standards Committee. SUMMARY:Translating Spanish Corporate Documents: 10 Common Pitfalls
DESCRIPTION:Join this webinar as we delve into the pitfalls\, nuances\, and intricacies of translating Spanish corporate documents.\nWe’ll explore common pitfalls\, shed light on the nuances of business terminology in Spanish-speaking countries\, and discuss how it relates to the terminology used in Anglo-American jurisdictions. Focusing on 10 pitfalls often encountered when translating Spanish corporate documents\, this webinar begins with a brief overview of the major features of five main forms of doing business in Spanish-speaking countries\, showing how they match up (or don’t) with sole proprietorships\, partnerships\, limited liability companies\, and corporations in Anglo-American jurisdictions. \n“The Basics” examines common terms such as sociedad\, socio\, and societario\, for which the appropriate translation is not always obvious and depends on the specific corporate form that each entity adopts. Attention then turns to exploring frequently found invented and all-too-literal translations that are generally to be avoided\, as well as reviewing false friends and common ellipses that often puzzle translators. Sections on “weird stuff” and tricky expressions address aspects of corporate documents that may prove confusing\, such as cryptic phrases and stylistic differences that\, if overlooked\, can render English translations awkward.
