SUMMARY:Decision-Making in Corporate Law Translation\, Part 1
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we tackle common challenges that legal translators face when working across different legal systems.\nHow do you translate an LLC when there is no exact equivalent in your legal system? Is a partnership truly the same as a sociedad colectiva? And what distinguishes a right of first refusal from a preemptive right? Strengthen your legal translation skills by learning how business organizations are structured in common law jurisdictions. \nThis workshop explores partnerships\, limited liability entities\, and corporations\, while addressing common challenges that arise when translating across legal systems. Through comparisons\, translation strategies\, and hands-on exercises using real legal documents\, you’ll learn how to accurately translate business entity terminology and handle legal concepts that may not have direct equivalents in Spanish-speaking jurisdictions. \nBy attending this workshop\, you will:\n\nUnderstand the concept of business organizations in common law jurisdictions and distinguish business entities from corporate entities.\nIdentify the principal forms of partnerships\, including general partnerships\, limited partnerships (LPs)\, limited liability partnerships (LLPs)\, and limited liability limited partnerships (LLLPs).\nExamine the distinguishing features of limited liability companies (LLCs) and compare them functionally with selected business entities in Spanish-speaking jurisdictions.\nRecognize translation challenges that arise from non-equivalent legal concepts and develop strategies for translating business entity names and organizational terminology.\nApply your knowledge through guided translation exercises drawn from partnership agreements\, limited partnership agreements\, and LLC operating agreements.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nGraciela Susana Souto is a translator and attorney with more than 35 years of experience in legal translation\, contract law\, intellectual property\, and comparative legal systems. She is a professor of legal translation and Anglo-American law at the Universidad Católica Argentina and has also taught at the Universidad de Buenos Aires\, the Universidad de Belgrano\, and the Universidad del Salvador. She was an instructor of legal translation in the Certificate in Translation Program at New York University’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies and has taught professional courses for translator associations throughout Latin America. She teaches at the undergraduate and graduate levels and regularly serves as a thesis advisor and member of graduate thesis committees. She has been invited by ATA to deliver seminars and webinars and was a distinguished speaker at the 2011 ATA Annual Conference. She also served as president of the Ethics Tribunal of the Buenos Aires Association of Sworn Translators. Her professional focus is on interpreting contract language and legal drafting across languages.

SUMMARY:Decision-Making in Corporate Law Translation\, Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Go beyond entity names and corporate documents to tackle some of the most challenging concepts in corporate law translation\, including shareholder rights\, stock options\, RSUs\, phantom shares\, and other equity-based compensation mechanisms.\nHow do you translate a right of first refusal when the concept functions differently across legal systems? What distinguishes a tag-along right from a drag-along right? And how should translators approach terms such as phantom shares\, stock options\, or voting trusts when no direct equivalent exists? Designed for English-to-Spanish and Spanish-to-English legal translators\, this workshop examines corporate structures\, shareholder rights\, and equity-based compensation mechanisms in the United States and the United Kingdom. Through authentic corporate documents and guided translation exercises\, participants will deepen their understanding of key legal concepts and develop strategies for making accurate\, informed translation decisions rather than relying on automatic terminology equivalents. \nBy attending this workshop\, you will:\n\nUnderstand the structure and governance of corporations in the United States and the United Kingdom\, including the role of bylaws\, shareholders’ agreements\, and other corporate documents.\nAnalyze different classes of shares\, shareholder rights\, voting arrangements\, and control mechanisms used in corporate governance.\nDistinguish among key share-related rights and protections\, including rights of first refusal\, preemptive rights\, tag-along rights\, and drag-along rights.\nExplore stock options\, phantom shares\, and other equity-based incentive mechanisms\, along with share pledges and security interests involving shares.\nApply practical translation strategies through guided exercises based on authentic corporate law documents\, including bylaws\, shareholders’ agreements\, voting provisions\, and share pledge clauses.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nGraciela Susana Souto is a translator and attorney with more than 35 years of experience in legal translation\, contract law\, intellectual property\, and comparative legal systems. SUMMARY:Translation Techniques: From Brief Theory to Intensive Practice (EnglishSpanish)
DESCRIPTION:Translators are accountable for their translations. This workshop will provide tools to choose the right techniques for the best human and AI-generated translations.\nIn this workshop\, the process goes from very brief theoretical content to intensive practice. As professional translators\, we make innumerable decisions in our daily work\, and must account for them! Clients will be happy if they ask why\, and translators can provide clear answers beyond doubt. This will happen only if translators are familiar with translation techniques and able to choose the right one for each case. Also\, more than one potential solution might arise for a single case\, and it’s up to knowledgeable translators to choose the best. If they wish to foster professional growth\, not being well-trained is not an option. \nJoin this workshop to explore theoretical concepts such as borrowing\, calque\, literal translation\, transposition\, modulation\, equivalence\, adaptation\, reduction\, expansion\, recognized translation\, re-semanticization\, and transcreation\, and apply them to dozens of practical examples that will help you understand concepts clearly and grasp the intended meaning. You’ll also learn what can be omitted\, changed\, or added\, and how and when to do it safely. Justified translation enhances professional growth and credibility. \nBy attending this workshop\, you will:\n\nLearn or refresh translation techniques.\nGain a deep understanding of concepts.\nApply concepts to everyday examples.\nGrow more confident in your own judgment.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nLiliana Bernardita Mariotto is a certified translator and retired certified university professor. She graduated from Buenos Aires University both as a certified translator and a university lecturer. SUMMARY:Mastermind Program: Open for Applications
DESCRIPTION:Don’t go it alone! Translators and interpreters often go into business understanding that finding and retaining clients will be hard work. What many fail to see\, however\, is the difficulty in running a business alone and not always knowing what to do next. This is where ATA can help! \nATA’s Mastermind Program uses a peer-based mentoring approach offering a combination of brainstorming\, education\, and support. You will work together in small groups to share knowledge on specific topics and work collaboratively to achieve your learning goals. \nThe deadline to apply is February 28.
