He holds a bachelor’s degree in translation and East Asian Studies from McGill University\, a certificate of advanced Chinese proficiency from Beijing Language and Culture University\, and a master’s of business administration from the University of Nevada\, Reno. \nNicolás Arízaga is a political consultant\, researcher\, and English<>Spanish translator and interpreter. He specializes in narratives\, political communication\, rhetoric\, international affairs\, policy\, and discourse analysis. He is the chief executive officer of Political and Legal Translation Ltd. in Denver\, Colorado\, and a registered Spanish court interpreter for the Wyoming Supreme Court. Nicolás is also an assistant director for the master of public policy at the University of Colorado Denver. He is a member of ATA’s Advocacy Committee and the Spanish Language Division’s Podcast Committee. He serves as a director on the board for Colorado Partners of the Americas. \nCristina Helmerichs D. is a conference interpreter and judiciary interpreter based in Austin\, Texas. During her thirty-year career as a Spanish-English conference interpreter\, much of her work has been in bilateral negotiations regarding transportation and legal matters\, but she also has extensive experience in the oil industry\, non-profit service organizational training\, and the software security industry. Cristina is a consultant for the Federal Court Interpreter Certification Exam and for the Administrative Office of the US Courts. She currently serves on ATA’s Board of Directors and is chair of the association’s Interpreting Policy Advisory Committee. \nBill Rivers is principal at WP Rivers and Associates. A former Russian-to-English translator and interpreter\, he has more than 30 years’ experience in language advocacy at the national level\, with significant experience in culture and language for economic development and national security in the intelligence community. Bill has also worked extensively in language policy development and advocacy. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to better collaborate with school districts when providing interpreting services in special education settings.\nInterpreters collaborating with educators must take the steps necessary to prepare for the complex vocabulary and protocols that involve psychoeducational and speech evaluations. Throughout the process of assessment and eligibility for special education\, it is imperative that interpretation is accurate\, unbiased\, and complete to ensure that standardized tests provide a valid and true picture of a student’s abilities\, strengths\, and areas of concern. \nThis presentation will provide interpreters with an overview of common psychoeducational and speech pathology assessments used in the educational setting\, the implications of working with an untrained educational interpreter\, and questions that the interpreter should ask during pre-consultation meetings. The presentation will also include resources to prepare for this type of interpreting assignment and a glossary of terms commonly used in the special education evaluation process. \nYou will learn how to:\n\nPrepare for interpreting in special education settings\nExpand your vocabulary and learn protocols specific to psychoeducational and speech evaluations in special education\nAvoid the negative effect of interpreter bias and unpreparedness on the outcome of evaluations\n\nThis webinar was organized in collaboration with ATA’s Medical Division. \nAbout the Presenter\nAna Soler is the chairperson of the National Association of Educational Translators and Interpreters of Spoken Languages and founder of SeSo\, Inc.\, which provides school districts with qualified and trained interpreters and multicultural family engagement workshops. Ana has authored interpreter training curricula nationally for the Intercultural Parent and Youth Leadership Program\, the Interpretation Academy for Bilingual High School Students\, the Arkansas Interpreter in Education Credential Training\, and a 40-hour course for medical interpreters. She has also contributed to the University of Georgia’s online interpreting courses\, including the Professional Interpreter in Education Certificate course and the Professional Interpreter in Special Education Certificate course. Ana hopes to continue identifying ways to highlight the cultural wealth of multilingual families while supporting schools to strengthen cultural and linguistic bridges.
