DESCRIPTION:Learn about the exciting field of localization and the skills needed to be a successful localizer.\nLocalization is the act of customizing language services and products to audiences who speak different languages. The strategies employed in localization are highly dependent on cultural\, subject field\, and textual/product expectations. Localization strategy is tailored to business goals in areas like sales\, expansion\, and growth. Localization work is performed in a dynamic environment of rapid technological advancements\, ever-shifting regulations\, and looming and unforeseen risks. \nJoin us to learn about opportunities in this exciting field and the skills needed to be a successful localizer. You will leave this session understanding that localization is anything but a one-size-fits-all approach. \nWhat will you learn?\n\ncontemporary definitions for localization and quality in localization\nthe verticals\, services types\, and products encompassed by localization\, along with the linguistic\, technical\, and quality planning that goes into producing localizations\nabout the variety of practitioners that collaborate to produce localization products and the competencies required for localization management roles\nbest practices that should be incorporated into localization productions\, such as defining expectations for work and managing terminology and intellectual property securely\nstrategies for gauging the level of localization maturity in place at organizations so they can efficiently engage when working to take organizations to the next level\n\nAbout the Presenter\nAlaina Brandt is assistant professor of professional practice in the Translation and Localization Management program of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. She is membership secretary of ASTM (formerly known as American Society for Testing and Materials) F43 on Language Services and Products\, the group that writes American National Standards related to translation and localization. She is an expert in Technical Committee 37 on Language and terminology of the International Organization for Standardization. She is on the board of directors of the American Translators Association. She holds a Master of Arts in Language\, Literature\, and Translation from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.

In this workshop\, attendees will examine the transcreation field—also known as creative adaption—and discuss related concepts\, such as localization and multilingual copywriting. Name-checks and cultural consultations will also be covered. \nConcrete examples\, including transcreated slogans\, newsletters\, and social media posts\, will be presented and reviewed to show what makes them work. Attendees will also explore industry terminology\, client expectations\, and managing feedback. \nCome prepared for hands-on learning!\nThere will be two in-class exercises and one homework assignment. Adopting a consistent style provides added value to clients\, increasing the possibility of breaking into the higher segments of the translation market. \nThis webinar will include a “how-to” for attendees to create a personal style set for any specific field\, based upon essential resources such as standards\, key industry bodies\, and style guides. Using a reference like this quickly becomes routine and has the benefit of making you more of an authority. That in turn gives you the confidence to defend your choices to your clients\, when necessary. \nWhat will you learn?\n\nWhat to do when the client does not give you style instructions\nWhy defining your own style set is worthwhile\nHow to build your own style set step-by-step\n\nAbout the Presenter\nKaren Tkaczyk\, CT is a chemist-turned freelance translator specializing in editing and scientific translation. She is ATA-certified (French>English). Early in her career\, Karen worked as a research and development chemist in Europe and a quality assurance manager for a cosmetic and medical device manufacturer in the U.S. She established McMillan Translation in 2005 and now works from her home in the Denver\, Colorado\, area. She serves as ATA secretary (2017-2021).
