He has degrees in law\, humanities\, and social sciences\, along with a degree in translation. His diverse experience includes participating in criminal investigations and prosecutions and serving as in-house counsel and legal advisor in law firms. His portfolio includes translation and interpreting work for academia\, law firms\, and private clients. Additionally\, he has contributed to the profession by serving on ATA’s Professional Development Committee and ATA’s Law Division Leadership Council. \nBen Karl\, MBA\, CT is an ATA-certified French into English translator specializing in corporate and marketing communications and user experience from French and Mandarin into English. He serves as ATA director\, chair of ATA’s Advocacy Committee\, and is a member of ATA’s Membership Committee and The ATA Chronicle Editorial Advisory Board. He is also chair of the International Federation of Translators’ (FIT) Translatio Standing Committee and edits À Propos\, the blog of ATA’s French Language Division. He has a bachelor’s degree in translation and East Asian studies from McGill University\, a certificate of advanced Chinese proficiency from Beijing Language and Culture University\, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Nevada\, Reno.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to shape the future of T&I practices! \nAbout the Presenters\nAngelika Vaasa has worked at the translation services of the European Parliament for almost 20 years. She is responsible for translation quality management and participates in the standards development work of ISO Technical Committee 37 (TC37) as one of the experts for the European Parliament. She is currently the convenor of ISO TC37/WG 11 – Plain Language and an active member of ISO TC37/SC5/WG 1 – Translation. She is one of the project leaders for the 2024 update of ISO 11669 Translation Projects – General Guidance. \nAlan Melby\, CT began his work in machine translation in 1970 and transitioned to tools for human translators by 1979. In the 1980s\, he became an ATA-certified French>English translator. In the 1990s\, he co-authored The Possibility of Language with philosopher Terry Warner. He has contributed to the translation profession through his work on the governing boards of ATA and the International Federation of Translators (FIT) and while serving as president of LTAC Global\, a small nonprofit\, and has helped develop translation standards. Retiring from full-time faculty status at Brigham Young University (BYU) in 2014 as an emeritus full professor\, he still works with BYU’s Translation Research Group and the Tranquality Council on several projects\, including labels on translation output. He currently chairs the North America Regional Center of FIT. \nSteve Lank is the chief executive officer of Denver-based Cesco Linguistic Services. He has worked in the language services industry since 1987\, first as a translator and project manager\, subsequently holding senior management positions in the U.S.\, Ireland\, and Spain. He has been active in standards development through ASTM International since 1998 and currently serves as chair of the ASTM F43.03 Subcommittee for Translation. He taught in the Graduate Studies in Interpreting and Translation Program at the University of Maryland and proudly participates in ATA’s Mentoring Program. He has an MA in Spanish translation and interpreting from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. \nIngemar Strandvik has worked for 15 years as a quality manager for the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation\, where he formerly worked as a translator from English\, French\, and Spanish\, into Swedish. For the past 10 years\, he has been participating in standardization work in ISO and ASTM International\, acting as co-project leader for ISO 11669. He has published on translation quality and institutional translation. Prior to joining the European Commission\, he worked in translation training\, lexicography\, and as a Swedish state-authorized legal translator from Spanish into Swedish. He has BA degrees in Spanish philology\, translation\, and interpreting and a master’s degree in European Union law. \nGiovanna Carriero-Contreras is a business solutions architect with over 30 years of leadership in the language industry. As a recognized expert in interpreting and translation\, she has built a successful linguistics company and co-authored essential industry textbooks. Since 2014\, she has been deeply involved in setting professional standards for the interpreting industry. She is chief of the U.S. delegation for ISO/TC 37/SC 5\, focusing on translation\, interpreting\, and related technology standards. She served as editor for ISO 13611:2024 “Interpreting Services — Community Interpreting — Requirements and Recommendations\,” and is the co-project leader for ISO 18841:2018 “Interpreting Services — General Requirements and Recommendations.” She is also a member of ASTM International’s Committee F43 on Language Services and Products\, of ATA’s Standards Committee\, and has played a pivotal role in the development of the American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education’s National Code of Ethics for Interpreters and Translators in Education.

Guiñazú is a certified sworn (court-approved) translator. She has an MBA in marketing management (Universidad del Salvador and Albany University – State University of New York) and is a certified international copy editor. She has a certification in post-editing and transcreation from the Translation Automation User Society. Specializing in marketing\, legal\, and quality issues\, she is a member of ASTM (TC F43 on Language Services and Products)\, ACES\, PLAIN\, and ATA’s Standards Committee. SUMMARY:Student Translation Award: Submission Deadline
DESCRIPTION:ATA awards a grant-in-aid to a student for a literary or sci-tech translation or translation-related project. The project\, which may be derived from any facet of translation studies\, should result in a project with post-grant applicability\, such as a publication\, a conference presentation\, or teaching materials. Computerized materials are ineligible\, as are dissertations and theses. Translations must be from a foreign language INTO ENGLISH. Previously untranslated works are preferred.
