SUMMARY:Health Care Equity and Language Access in Indigenous Populations
DESCRIPTION:Explore the particularities of working with Indigenous Central American languages and the current realities that speakers of these languages face regarding equity in language access to health care.\nNavigating the American medical system is\, to say the least\, a headache—and that’s if you speak English! Now imagine having to do it in Spanish when that’s not your first language. California is home to a growing population of Mexican and Central American immigrants whose first language is not Spanish. In this webinar\, we will focus on the most commonly spoken Indigenous languages in the Bay Area\, how they differ from Spanish\, and why they cannot be called “dialects.” We will also look at the major cultural barriers that these immigrant populations face in navigating the American health care system. Translators and interpreters\, whether they work in the medical field or not\, serve as a bridge between languages and cultures. The reality of Indigenous language speakers is often misunderstood and worth learning more about. \nYou will learn how to:\n\nIdentify the main Mexican indigenous languages spoken in California\nUnderstand the major challenges faced by indigenous groups in the United States\nEducate health care providers and other stakeholders about the importance of using indigenous language professionals whenever possible.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nWilliam Giller received his M.A. from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. He has worked as a freelance translator and conference interpreter and is currently the Digital Content Director for the Northern California Translators Association. William works as a senior interpreter and translator for English\, French\, Portuguese and Spanish at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health in Palo Alto\, California. As a Certified Healthcare InterpreterTM (Spanish)\, William has interpreted for countless patients and families who speak Spanish as a second language and has worked with a number of indigenous language interpreters. He has witnessed firsthand the linguistic and cultural challenges that immigrants from Mexico and Central America face when navigating the U.S. healthcare system.

She is accredited to the United Nations and the European Institutions. While Maha is based near Birmingham in the United Kingdom\, she offers her services all over the world\, whether in person or remotely. She has interpreted in different settings for speakers and organizations including heads of state and governments; at summits; at arbitrations; and for visiting delegations. Maha served on the ATA Interpreters Division Leadership Council for two years. This session will provide a clear idea of the steps you need to take to create a future for your work. \nConfessions of an MT Post-Editor: A Report from the Trenches of the World’s Newest LSP Profession\, presented by Matthew Schlecht \nMachine translation post-editing (MTPE) is a relatively novel and growing sector in the language services provider profession\, and this session will cover the process from a practitioner’s perspective. The speaker’s methods will be outlined and demonstrated with actual patent translation examples in the German-\, Japanese-\, French-\, and Spanish-into-English pairs. \nMany MT engines and computer-assisted translation tools are currently used\, but the focus here will involve the post-editing of Google Translate output to produce human translation-quality texts using SDL Trados Studio. Common pitfalls and workarounds will be explained\, and throughput expectations and the differences between MTPE and the revision discussed. \n\nTM & MT Tools: Rivalry or Symbiosis? presented by Yuri Balashow \nTranslation technologies\, which include machine translation (MT) and computer-aided/translation memory tools (CAT/TM)\, have made spectacular advances in the last decade. Despite their common origin\, they parted ways in the 1990s. Historically\, their relation has been strained and complicated. He holds a bachelor’s degree in translation and East Asian Studies from McGill University\, a certificate of advanced Chinese proficiency from Beijing Language and Culture University\, and a master’s of business administration from the University of Nevada\, Reno. \nNicolás Arízaga is a political consultant\, researcher\, and English<>Spanish translator and interpreter. He specializes in narratives\, political communication\, rhetoric\, international affairs\, policy\, and discourse analysis. He is the chief executive officer of Political and Legal Translation Ltd. in Denver\, Colorado\, and a registered Spanish court interpreter for the Wyoming Supreme Court. Nicolás is also an assistant director for the master of public policy at the University of Colorado Denver. He is a member of ATA’s Advocacy Committee and the Spanish Language Division’s Podcast Committee. He serves as a director on the board for Colorado Partners of the Americas. \nCristina Helmerichs D. is a conference interpreter and judiciary interpreter based in Austin\, Texas. During her thirty-year career as a Spanish-English conference interpreter\, much of her work has been in bilateral negotiations regarding transportation and legal matters\, but she also has extensive experience in the oil industry\, non-profit service organizational training\, and the software security industry. Cristina is a consultant for the Federal Court Interpreter Certification Exam and for the Administrative Office of the US Courts. She currently serves on ATA’s Board of Directors and is chair of the association’s Interpreting Policy Advisory Committee. \nBill Rivers is principal at WP Rivers and Associates. A former Russian-to-English translator and interpreter\, he has more than 30 years’ experience in language advocacy at the national level\, with significant experience in culture and language for economic development and national security in the intelligence community. Bill has also worked extensively in language policy development and advocacy.
