SUMMARY:Translating for Read-Aloud: Performativity and Rhythm in Picture Books
DESCRIPTION:Picture books don’t just tell stories — they perform them. Explore how to balance style\, design\, illustrations\, and read-aloud impact to make every element work together.\nThis advanced webinar takes a close look at the challenges of translating picture books. It treats translation as both a creative and performance-driven process that shapes how young readers experience language and culture. \nYou will tackle one of the biggest issues when translating for children and young adults: balancing formal elements like rhyme\, meter\, and style with the need for a text that works naturally when read aloud. This webinar will examine how words interact with illustrations\, layout\, and typography\, and how those elements affect translation choices. Drawing on the work of Riitta Oittinen and Henri Meschonnic\, it will also explore rhythm as more than meter or cadence\, focusing on how rhythm shapes meaning\, tone\, and reader engagement. \nStrengthen your decision-making skills by evaluating when close adherence to form helps or hurts the reading experience. You will leave with practical tools to justify your choices to editors and publishers and to approach picture book translation as work that carries real cultural impact. \nYou will learn how to:\n\nMake clear decisions about when to keep rhyme and meter and when to adapt them so your translation sounds natural and works well aloud.\nLook at the entire picture book before finalizing your draft\, taking into account the text\, illustrations\, layout\, and lettering as parts of a whole.\nShape rhythm intentionally to support meaning and tone\, and justify your choices based on how they affect the reader’s experience.\nCommunicate complex translation decisions clearly to editors and publishers\, demonstrate your expertise\, and position yourself for higher-level projects for children and young adults.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nLaura Estefanía is a literary translator\, editor\, and educator specializing in children’s literature. She holds advanced degrees in literature and literary translation from the University of Buenos Aires and a master’s degree in children’s literature. Her career gives her a full\, 360-degree view of the publishing world. She has worked as a translator for The Walt Disney Company and as an editor for Macmillan. She currently leads the Capicúa children’s imprint at V&R Editoras. Her work focuses on the real-world challenges of translating books meant to be read aloud\, especially the balance between style\, rhythm\, and performance. She teaches literary translation\, publishing\, and script translation at several institutions\, helping professionals make strong\, defensible choices that work on the page and out loud.

SUMMARY:When Words Mislead: How to Read English Contracts Clearly in the Age of AI
DESCRIPTION:Spot hidden meanings in contracts\, flag misleading terms\, and make confident translation decisions using expert insight and AI tools.\nTranslating English contracts rarely causes trouble because of complex legal terms. More often\, the problem comes from ordinary words used in highly specific legal ways. When taken at face value\, those words can mislead translators and create ambiguity or unintended legal effects. \nThis webinar shows you how to spot those risks early on in your translation process. \nYou’ll learn how meaning is built in English contracts through drafting conventions\, not just vocabulary. We’ll break down recurring language such as open-ended time references\, conditional phrasing\, proviso clauses\, and other commonly misunderstood formulations. The focus is practical: What is this clause actually doing? What legal function does this wording serve? \nThe webinar also covers how to use AI responsibly. You’ll review AI-generated interpretations of contract excerpts and evaluate whether they truly reflect the legal meaning. You’ll learn how to correct\, refine\, and control AI output instead of relying on it blindly. \nDesigned for translators working to or from English in any language pair\, this webinar helps you produce clearer\, more accurate contract translations while reducing risk. \nYou will learn how to:\n\nIdentify ordinary words in English contracts that carry hidden legal meaning.\nMake clear\, defensible decisions when translating ambiguous contract language.\nEvaluate AI-generated interpretations and spot legal inaccuracies.\nUse AI to speed up research without losing control over meaning.\nPosition yourself as a trusted legal translator who reduces risk and revisions.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nGraciela Susana Souto is a certified translator and attorney with more than 35 years of experience in legal translation\, contract law\, intellectual property\, and comparative legal systems. She is a professor of legal translation and Anglo-American law at the Universidad Católica Argentina and has also taught at the Universidad de Buenos Aires\, the Universidad de Belgrano\, and the Universidad del Salvador. She was an instructor of legal translation in the Certificate in Translation Program at New York University’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies and has taught professional courses for translator associations throughout Latin America. She teaches at the undergraduate and graduate levels and regularly serves as a thesis advisor and member of graduate thesis committees. She has been invited by ATA to deliver seminars and webinars and was a distinguished speaker at the 2011 ATA Annual Conference. She also served as president of the Ethics Tribunal of the Buenos Aires Association of Sworn Translators. Her professional focus is on interpreting contract language and legal drafting across languages.

SUMMARY:Using NotebookLM and Gemini for Reliable AI Translation
DESCRIPTION:Want to use AI in specialized translation without risking errors or hallucinations? Join this webinar to learn a practical workflow with NotebookLM and Gemini that keeps your work accurate\, consistent\, and client-ready.\nAI tools can speed up specialized translation\, but they can also introduce errors\, hallucinations\, and inconsistent style. This webinar shows how to build a practical workflow that keeps AI fast and reliable. \nLearn how to use NotebookLM to organize and ground your project sources\, including reference materials\, glossaries\, and style guides. Then use Gemini to work directly with those materials to draft and refine translations while staying anchored to verified sources. SUMMARY:The Changing Terminology of French Law
DESCRIPTION:Learn the latest French legal terminology changes from recent Civil and Criminal Code reforms\, including November 2025 updates.\nIn the past 20 years\, French legal terminology evolved: the core part of the French Civil Code (on the law of obligations) has been completely rewritten\, the French Code of Civil Procedure has undergone significant changes\, and some courts have been renamed while others have been eliminated. Furthermore\, the entire Code of Criminal Procedure is being rewritten\, with additional changes made to the names of several longstanding courts. This means that older dictionaries and reference materials\, such as the excellent ones produced by the Council of Europe in the 1990s\, are hopelessly out of date\, and internet searches can also be misleading unless the materials you find online indicate the date on which they were drafted. This webinar provides a concise overview of these changes\, with clear explanations by prominent lawyer-translator and past ATA President Tom West. \nYou will learn how to:\n\nUpdate your knowledge of key terms in modern French law.\nExplain recent terminology changes to clients with confidence.\nReceive a practical handout summarizing the major updates.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nTom West received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia Law School\, was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia in 1990\, and practiced law for five years before starting a legal translation company. He has more than 35 years of experience as a legal translator and has taught legal translation at Georgia State University\, Kent State University\, and Montclair State University. He is a popular presenter at ATA conferences and around the world. He is ATA-certified for translation from French\, Spanish\, German\, and Dutch into English.

SUMMARY:Translation Techniques: From Brief Theory to Intensive Practice (EnglishSpanish)
DESCRIPTION:Translators are accountable for their translations. This workshop will provide tools to choose the right techniques for the best human and AI-generated translations.\nIn this workshop\, the process goes from very brief theoretical content to intensive practice. As professional translators\, we make innumerable decisions in our daily work\, and must account for them! Clients will be happy if they ask why\, and translators can provide clear answers beyond doubt. This will happen only if translators are familiar with translation techniques and able to choose the right one for each case. Also\, more than one potential solution might arise for a single case\, and it’s up to knowledgeable translators to choose the best. If they wish to foster professional growth\, not being well-trained is not an option. \nJoin this workshop to explore theoretical concepts such as borrowing\, calque\, literal translation\, transposition\, modulation\, equivalence\, adaptation\, reduction\, expansion\, recognized translation\, re-semanticization\, and transcreation\, and apply them to dozens of practical examples that will help you understand concepts clearly and grasp the intended meaning. You’ll also learn what can be omitted\, changed\, or added\, and how and when to do it safely. Justified translation enhances professional growth and credibility. \nBy attending this workshop\, you will:\n\nLearn or refresh translation techniques.\nGain a deep understanding of concepts.\nApply concepts to everyday examples.\nGrow more confident in your own judgment.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nLiliana Bernardita Mariotto is a certified translator and retired certified university professor. She graduated from Buenos Aires University both as a certified translator and a university lecturer. Working for 40+ years as a freelance translator\, she is also a graduate and post-graduate lecturer\, workshop instructor\, and speaker at conferences in several countries (Argentina\, the U.S.\, Mexico\, Peru\, Brazil\, Uruguay\, and Spain).
