Earning the ATA certification credential is the hallmark of a committed translation professional.

How does a translator earn ATA certification?

  1. Fulfilling Prerequisites: Candidates must meet higher education requirements or document at least five years of experience working as a professional translator or interpreter. Candidates also sign a pledge to uphold the ATA Code of Ethics and Professional Practice.

  2. Passing an examination: Candidates must pass a challenging three-hour examination designed to test abilities, problem solving, and fundamental knowledge essential to successful translation.

Is there more to the ATA-certified translator status ?

ATA-certified translators maintain their credential by fulfilling continuing education renewal requirements every three years. Certification is an individual commitment to the ongoing pursuit of knowledge in the profession.
