Following a whirlwind cycle of legislation, California Assembly Bill 5—or AB 5 for short—was signed into law last September. This effort to reclassify independent contractors as mandatory employees left many freelancers stunned, and the news media went into overdrive with extensive coverage. But after all the published pros and cons, and subsequent political maneuvering, what do we really know about AB 5? How has it impacted translators and interpreters in California?
