ATA's 15 professional-interest Divisions provide specialty- and language-specific information to assist their members in today's competitive marketplace. They offer a wide variety of benefits and services, all organized by Division volunteers. So, what are ATA Divisions up to now? Here's the latest!
September 2008
- Don't miss the Fall 2008 issue of Hangul Herald, the ATA Korean Language Division (KLD) newsletter. This edition begins with "The Importance of Being Prepared," an insightful commentary by KLD Administrator Vania Haam. Readers will also find a complete rundown on all the Korean-specific presentations at the upcoming ATA Annual Conference (November 5-8 in Orlando, Florida).
- The ATA Portuguese Language Division (PLD) has published its Summer 2008 edition of PLData, the Division's quarterly newsletter. This issue details the PLD's participation in discussions to add Portuguese to the Graduate program at Monterey Institute of International Studies.
- The Summer 2008 issue of Source, the ATA Literary Division's (LD) newsletter, is now online. This issue features "Hot Links for Literary Translators" and a new column from Division member Tony Beckwith. Other highlights include "More than Beeps and Blasts," "Passage into Literary Translation by a Judicial Interpreter," and "Adventures in Poetic Translation."
August 2008
- The ATA Slavic Languages Division (SLD) has just published its Summer 2008 issue of SlavFile, the Division's quarterly newsletter. This edition focuses on interpreting, and highlights include Interpreters in International Organizations, "To Act or Not to Act:" An Interpreter’s Dilemma, and Mental Pilates for Interpreters.
- Be sure to look online for the Summer 2008 edition of Caduceus, the ATA Medical Division's (MD) quarterly newsletter. In addition to glossaries, terminology, and acronyms, this issue features a revealing look at community interpreting in the Canadian healthcare system as well as reviews of anesthesia awareness and Alzheimer's disease.
July 2008
- Division newsletters offer relevant articles, terminology, glossaries, and industry updates targeted to your language and specialty. This is a key benefit of your ATA membership. Look for access to all Division newsletters on line.
- Eight ATA Divisions are holding elections
this year. Volunteering to serve as a division officer may seem like a leap into the unknown. But the challenge can be well worth it, both professionally and personally. Look for more information online at ATA Division Elections.
- The ATA Literary Division (LD) invites applications for volunteers to handle web design and editing of its annual peer-reviewed journal Beacons. There is a small honorarium for both positions. Applicants must be members of ATA. For details, click Beacons XI web designer or editor.

- Look online now for the latest edition of Language Tech News, the newsletter of the ATA Language Technology Division (LTD). In addition to the newsletter's familiar tips-and-techniques columns, this issue explores the use of "regular expressions" to speed up quality assurance and the reasons why you might want to know more about OpenDNS. Also available as an RSS feed.
- Don't miss the Spring 2008 issue of Caduceus! Published by the ATA Medical Division (MD) , this edition examines current medical topics, including bariatric surgery and avian flu, and also provides translators and interpreters with "need to know" glossaries. In addition the newsletter provides four pages of invaluable online medical links.
- The ATA Slavic Languages Division (SLD) has released the Spring 2008 issue of SlavFile, the Division's quarterly newsletter. Highlights in this edition include "Increasing Translation Efficiency," "A Day in the Life of a Medical Interpreter," "The Politics of Language," and "Slovenian Poetry in Translation." Back issues of SlavFile are archived on the SLD website.
April 2008
- The Spring 2008 edition of Hangul Herald, the quarterly newsletter of the Korean Language Division (KLD), has been published on the Division's website.
This third edition includes member stories of ATA's 48th Annual Conference, a glossary of Korean familial terms, and one author's unique perspective on getting to know colleagues.
- The ATA Portuguese Language Division (PLD) has released the Spring 2008 edition of PLData, the Division's quarterly newsletter. This issues offers readers an interview with Maria Chaves de Mello, a humorous approach to the anglicization of Portuguese by journalist Marcos Caetano, and the concept of jurisdiction in Brazilian law.
March 2008
- The ATA Spanish Language Division (SPD) has released the Spring 2008 issue of Intercambios, the Division's quarterly newsletter. For all the latest updates on news and events, join Espalista, the popular Division listserv. To find out more, visit the SPD website.
- The Spring 2008 issue of interaktiv is now available as an online download. This edition of the ATA ATA German Language Division's (GLD) quarterly newsletter features a thoughtful argument against the use of translation memory tools and a first-time conference-goer's adventures at the ATA Annual Conference in San Francisco.
- The ATA Translation Company Division (TCD) has announced that its 9th Annual Mid-Year Conference will be held July 17-20 at The Inverness Hotel and Conference Center in Englewood, CO. Click TCD in the Rockies: Translation with Altitude to download a flier with additional information.
February 2008
- The ATA German language Division (GLD) is accepting nominations from the division's membership for the 2008 election of GLD Administrator and Assistant Administrator. If you are interested in being a candidate for one of these positions or would like to nominate a candidate, please click GLD Call for Nominations 2008.
- The ATA Slavic Languages Division (SLD) has just released their Winter 2008 issue of SlavFile, the Division's quarterly newsletter. For download information and access to back issues, click SlavFile or visit the ATA Slavic Languages Division Website.
- Members of the ATA Literary Division (LD) , under the direction of Editor Michele McKay Aynesworth, have collaborated in the online publication of Beacons 10. This collection of literary translations features a varied selection of works from Europe and Latin America, as well as from Asia. The first edition of Beacons was published in 1992, and what started out as a one-time project quickly became a tradition. Visit Beacons 10 to begin reading now.

- The Medical Division (MD) has just published their Fall 2007-Winter 2008 edition of Caduceus, the Division newsletter. For download information and access to back issues of this Division newsletter, click ATA Medical Division Newsletter.
- The Italian Language Division (ILD) has announced a new Google Groups listserv for its members. The ILD is also actively seeking two newsletter editors and recommendations for the speakers at the ATA 49th Annual Conference in Orlando, FL (November 5-8, 2008). - The Medical Division (MD) has announced the launch its first website, offering glossaries, T&I links, information on how to join the MD listserv, and access to Caduceus, the MD newsletter. For additional information, click Medical Division Website.
