Topic: The Art of Learning “Re-translation”
Description:
In a recent, “real-life” translation project, our presenter, a San Francisco based translator specializing in cryptocurrency, worked on the Spanish re-translation of The Art of Learning by Josh Waitzkin, aimed at a Latin American audience.
The process began with draft translations produced using DeepL, which provided a solid foundation for the first phase. Each chapter was then reviewed line by line in collaboration with ChatGPT-4.0, which acted as an AI editing assistant throughout the project.
Together, the linguist and his AI-assistant ensured conceptual fidelity, stylistic consistency, and natural flow by comparing the source and target texts, refining register, and adapting idiomatic and cultural nuances.
Special attention was paid to domain-specific terminology, particularly in chess and tai chi, verifying usage across Spanish-language sources to ensure accuracy and resonance.
The workflow included several revision stages:
– an initial alignment pass
– a stylistic and cultural adaptation phase, and
– a final polish for tone and clarity
The result was a faithful, readable translation that maintains the depth and rhythm of Waitzkin’s original, tailored for Spanish-speaking audiences across Latin America.
