Description
I have worked as a translator and editor/proofreader since 1982, and as a consecutive interpreter from 1983. I studied French in France, Quebec, and Switzerland and Spanish in Spain. I have lived and worked in Belgium, Italy, Honduras, Hong Kong and the Caribbean as well as Canada both as an in-house and a freelance translator and interpreter. I have traveled extensively in over 145 countries and continuously exercise my language skills.
I have a Master of Arts in Translation from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. I took my third semester of this degree at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting (formerly ETI) of the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Prior to that, I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and Spanish (double major) from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada. As part of this degree, I spent a year at the Université de Laval in Quebec City, Quebec in francophone Canada. I also have certificates in TEFL/TESOL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language/Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Community Interpreting, Health Care Interpreting and Interpreting in Legal Settings.
I am a Certified Translator (Spanish to English) of STIBC (Society of Translators and Interpreters of British Columbia) and OTTIAQ (Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec), and a Certified Translator (French to English) of ATA (American Translators Association).
I have also provided services as a consecutive French/English and Spanish/English interpreter in the Health Care, Community and Immigration sectors for a number of Vancouver Lower Mainland agencies, as well as the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB), Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
From November 2019 to November 2023, I served on the board of the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC), for three years as Vice-President and one year as Member-at-Large. I also served on the board of STIBC as Treasurer (Jan-June 2019) and Registrar (June 2019 - June 2021). I am currently a member of STIBC's Ethics Committee.
I am also a literary translator and as of July 2024 have 40 book translations published with more underway.
