Doug volunteered as a Peace Corps volunteer in 1967 and was sent to Korea as a teacher of English. He lived in (경북 영천읍) Yeongch’eon and Seoul for a total of six years and subsequently interpreted consecutively between Korean and English for more than 50 years. In 1980, while serving as a U.S. diplomat, Doug volunteered to study Chinese, lived in Taipei, Shanghai, and Beijing for five years, and since has worked with Chinese for more than four decades.
He moved to France permanently in mid-November, 2025.
