Holly Holmes
Description
I am a freelance Portuguese-English translator, editor, and grant-writer with specializations in education, arts and entertainment, government and non-profit, and social science.
Along with a Diploma in Translation from the University of Westminster in London, UK, I have lived and worked in Brazil while completing fieldwork toward my PhD in Ethnomusicology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) with a minor in Latin American Studies. I lived, conducted research, and taught music performance and history in Portuguese for two years as a Fulbright Scholar in Belo Horizonte, Brazil in 2011-12. I have also taught in higher education at UIUC, University of Chester (UK), and as a guest artist at the Universidade Federal de S√£o Jo√£o del Rei (Brazil). Finally, I worked for 10+ wonderful years in higher education and non-profit management providing education services to more than 7,000+ K-12 students and teachers in underfunded schools as Director of Operations at the non-profit Lead Guitar and at the University of Arizona's Arizona Arts in Schools.
My work in academic research, arts management, and the music industry gives me a peculiar depth of knowledge in a wide range of areas, including culture, politics, anthropology, government, non-profit organizations, human rights, finance, travel, and a transnational perspective of higher education.
My translation projects have ranged from academic articles for peer-reviewed publications and journalism to artist biographies and song lyrics for performance by Brazilian musicians on tour in North America. I have published both original research and translations with the University of Illinois Press, Oxford University Press, and Cambridge Scholars Publishing.
Besides translation, editing, and proofreading, I love the creative work of subtitling and transcription services. Favorite projects have included music documentaries, field research audio transcription and video subtitles, government public hearings, and 24+ interviews from women on four continents for a non-fiction book publication.
Though I primarily work from Portuguese into English, I work in collaboration with colleague-linguists who are native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese. Therefore, I also accept projects into Portuguese on a case-by-case basis.
