Helen Eby, CT, has been working in the translation and interpreting industry since 1984. She is an ATA-certified Spanish<>English translator, a certified court interpreter (Washington State, Spanish), and a certified medical interpreter (National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters, Spanish).

Helen follows ASTM International guidelines for interpreting and translation and promotes them to her clients. She has also been involved in policy discussions with government officials who seek to promote better language access. She believes in the power of professional associations to promote best practices and advocate for the profession. Because of that, she has been involved in leadership in national and local associations.

Helen was a member of the ATA team that provided advice to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security regarding interpreting and translation. More recently, she was part of a team in the Interpreters Division that wrote job descriptions for interpreters and translators and outlined boundaries for artificial intelligence (AI) in interpreting.

In addition to serving on ATA’s Board of Directors, Helen chairs the Business Practices Education Committee. Her past leadership experiences include serving as administrator of ATA’s Interpreters Division and assistant administrator of the Spanish Language Division. She also founded the ATA Savvy Newcomer blog. Helen has also served as president of the Spanish Editors Association, president of the Oregon Society for Translators and Interpreters, and vice president of the Oregon Council for Healthcare Interpreters.
