Thank you, Rachel, for breaking this down so that translators can tackle their texts systematically. I also learnt about the Gender Decoder from your post. While it is supposed to be for employment ads, I was gratified to see that a text I had to radically change (a worldwide internal memo on the occasion of International Women’s Day) two years ago was deemed as “gender neutral” by the Gender Decoder. I did not use any tools for that revision of a translation, but I had *no* qualms advising the client that a closer translation of the source would certainly be offensive to many of its readers. The client accepted the comments with good grace – and, curiously, I have not seen a gender-biased text from that client since!
