This microcredential is designed for translators, interpreters, and other language professionals who want to start using generative AI effectively in their daily work.
With a very practical approach, this course explains what generative AI is, how it compares to machine translation, what it can and cannot do, and how it fits into language services workflows. You will learn how to communicate with AI tools through clear, intentional prompts, how to guide output for specific linguistic tasks, and how to evaluate results using professional judgment.
The course emphasizes practical prompting strategies, iteration, and prompt refinement, helping you move beyond trial-and-error and toward consistent, purposeful interaction with generative AI. By the end of the course, you will be able to design better prompts, recognize unreliable output, and integrate AI as a support tool without compromising quality.
Module 1
Foundations of Generative AI for Language Professionals
This module introduces the core concepts behind generative AI, including how large language models, chatbots, and prompts work together to generate content. You will explore key capabilities such as text generation, translation, summarization, and terminology extraction, as well as important limitations like hallucinations and bias.
The module also clarifies the differences between machine translation and generative AI, emphasizing the need for critical review and human expertise to ensure accurate, reliable results.
- What generative AI can realistically be used for
- Typical use cases for translators and interpreters
- Common misconceptions and unrealistic expectations
- Machine translation vs GenAI
- AI output as a draft, not a deliverable

Module 2
Chatbots and Core Prompting Principles
This module provides a hands-on introduction to leading AI chatbots and the principles of effective prompting. You will explore platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot, learning how to navigate their interfaces, compare outputs, and select the right tool for specific tasks. The focus is on crafting clear, specific prompts that guide AI output, as well as using features such as file uploads, voice input, and editing environments like Canvas.
By the end of this module, you will be able to interact confidently with chatbots and design prompts that produce consistent, high-quality results for language-related workflows.
- Introducing chatbots
- Confidentiality and model training
- Introduction to prompting
- Iterative prompting as part of the workflow
- Building sustainable prompting habits

Module 3
AI-Driven Search and Research
This module explores how AI enhances search, research, and professional workflows. You will learn how to move beyond basic keyword searches and instead use structured prompts to generate tailored, high-value outputs such as briefings, reports, and preparation materials. The module covers web-enabled AI search, deep research capabilities, and the integration of AI into browsers and tools. It also emphasizes critical evaluation of AI-generated information, including source verification and awareness of hallucinations.
By the end of this module, you will be able to use AI to support complex research tasks and build more efficient, insight-driven workflows.
