Virtual Workshop

Decision-Making in Corporate Law Translation, Part 1

July 14 / 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm EDT

Join us as we tackle common challenges that legal translators face when working across different legal systems.

How do you translate an LLC when there is no exact equivalent in your legal system? Is a partnership truly the same as a sociedad colectiva? And what distinguishes a right of first refusal from a preemptive right? Strengthen your legal translation skills by learning how business organizations are structured in common law jurisdictions.

This workshop explores partnerships, limited liability entities, and corporations, while addressing common challenges that arise when translating across legal systems. Through comparisons, translation strategies, and hands-on exercises using real legal documents, you’ll learn how to accurately translate business entity terminology and handle legal concepts that may not have direct equivalents in Spanish-speaking jurisdictions.

By attending this workshop, you will:

  1. Understand the concept of business organizations in common law jurisdictions and distinguish business entities from corporate entities.
  2. Identify the principal forms of partnerships, including general partnerships, limited partnerships (LPs), limited liability partnerships (LLPs), and limited liability limited partnerships (LLLPs).
  3. Examine the distinguishing features of limited liability companies (LLCs) and compare them functionally with selected business entities in Spanish-speaking jurisdictions.
  4. Recognize translation challenges that arise from non-equivalent legal concepts and develop strategies for translating business entity names and organizational terminology.
  5. Apply your knowledge through guided translation exercises drawn from partnership agreements, limited partnership agreements, and LLC operating agreements.
