Virtual Workshop

Translation Techniques: From Brief Theory to Intensive Practice (English<>Spanish)

August 22 / 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT

Translators are accountable for their translations. This workshop will provide tools to choose the right techniques for the best human and AI-generated translations.

In this workshop, the process goes from very brief theoretical content to intensive practice. We, as professional translators, make innumerable decisions in our daily work, and we must account for them! Clients will be happy if they ask why, and translators can provide clear answers beyond doubt. This will happen only if translators are familiar with translation techniques and able to choose the right one for each case. Also, more than one potential solution might arise for a single case, and it’s up to knowledgeable translators to choose the best. If they wish to foster professional growth, not being well-trained is not an option.

Join this workshop to explore theoretical concepts such as borrowing, calque, literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence, adaptation, reduction, expansion, recognized translation, re-semanticization, and transcreation, and apply them to dozens of practical examples that will help you understand concepts clearly and grasp the intended meaning. You’ll also learn what can be omitted, changed, or added, and how and when to do it safely. Justified translation enhances professional growth and credibility.

By attending this workshop, you will:

  1. Learn or refresh translation techniques.
  2. Gain a deep understanding of concepts.
  3. Apply concepts to everyday examples.
  4. Grow more confident in your own judgment.
