ATA 2024 Elections: Slate of Candidates Announced

ATA will hold its regularly scheduled elections at the upcoming ATA 65th Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon, October 30-November 2, 2024, to elect the following:

  • President-Elect (one unexpired position to be filled for a remaining term of one year).
  • Director (three regular positions, each for a three-year term).
  • Director (one unexpired position to be filled for a remaining term of one year).

All candidates for director positions will appear under the same ballot item, with longer positions being filled successively by candidates who receive the highest number of votes and the shorter, unexpired term positions being filled by the candidate(s) receiving the next highest number of votes.

Additional nominations, supported by a written petition signed by no fewer than 60 voting members and the nominee’s written acceptance statement, must be received by the Nominating and Leadership Development Committee by July 7. Acceptance statements and petitions should be submitted to Nominating and Leadership Development Committee Chair (NLDC) Karen Tkaczyk (nominations@atanet.org).

The elections will be online. Voting members will be sent their proxy voting information in mid-September. Candidate statements will be featured in the September/October issue of The ATA Chronicle and on ATA’s website.

To participate in ATA elections, you need to be a Voting member. You can become a Voting member by passing a certification exam, completing the Active Membership Review process, or successfully submitting proof of being a credentialed interpreter.

Congratulations to the 2024 International Booker Prize Winners!

ATA would like to congratulate German author Jenny Erbenbeck and her translator, Michael Hofmann, on winning the 2024 International Booker Prize! Hofmann is the first male translator to win and Erpenbeck is the first German writer to do so. This prestigious award is given annually for the finest single work of fiction from around the world that has been translated into English and published in the U.K. and/or Ireland. We commend the Booker Prize Foundation for its commitment to promoting international literature through translation and for elevating the role of translators from invisibility to equal partnership. Call for Articles: Translatio

The editorial team of Translatio, the quarterly newsletter of the International Federation of  Translators (FIT), is seeking articles from members of FIT organizations in English, French, or Spanish.

Articles can be about initiatives or achievements at your association or organization, International Translation Day, past or upcoming conferences, board elections, etc. To recap a recent initiative or event for fellow member associations, consider sending high-quality photos  with detailed captions in lieu of an article. If possible, please consider providing submissions in  more than one language to assist the editorial committee. Articles that do not meet the submission guidelines will not be accepted. Please note that articles may be edited for clarity and style. (Past issues may be viewed here.)

The deadline for submissions is June 5, 2024.
